New in the Roitfeld photo gallery: an interview with Julia Restoin-Roitfeld by Grazia, among the photos was this sweet one of her with her mom that I hadn't seen before. Taken at a fashion show in 1993, Julia was 13 and Carine was 39 at the time.
Notice that Julia is wearing a cool black tshirt that says "New York" in white letters, even then she was interested in the city that she now calls home. In the article she admits to a bit of fashion rebellion around this period in her life, wearing Doc Martens and wanting a piercing (which Carine condoned as long as she could go along), but Julia felt that the freedom of New York really allowed her to discover her own style: "I found it easier to build my own identity [in New York]. In Paris, they judge you more. It's hard to be bold in Paris and try your own thing."
