The Roitfelds in Cannes 2006

I love the extremes of the two all black Roitfeld styles: Julia is simple, severe, and refined; Carine is detailed, playful, and elegant. If Carine had styled Julia, I don't think she'd have made the obvious choice that is the Grecian headress as acessory to this particular gown. Personally I'd have gone for her hair down and a bit wild à la Et dieu crea la femme to counter the symmetry of the dress. Also, I find it interesting that Julia appears to be wearing no jewelry at all. Just the headband then?

Carine Roitfeld has the eye of an artist, she sees the entire female form as the canvas and she makes memorable images of the body by painting pictures with the clothing and accessories as the paint (in some cases perhaps as the frame). Carine uses the sum of the parts to create the whole in every single image that she styles, whether she is dressing herself or a model. She considers the movement of every piece, the contrasts of darks and lights, the symbolism that is transmitted by the garments, making every line count like a true artist.

Love Makes The World Go Round

I tried to buy the June/July issue of Vogue Paris today but alas it wasn't there yet. So I am contenting myself with a few of the editorials and I had to share this one with you. The model is Sasha Pivovarova, the photographer is Bruce Weber, and the stylist could only be Carine Roitfeld, is there anyone as visually clever? Does anyone else hear Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot singing "Sea, Sex, and Sun"?

The Roitfelds in Venice

The 53rd Venice Biennale commenced yesterday and partygoers had to make hard choices. Carine and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld opted to attend the bash onboard the Missoni family's sailboat in honor of the artist exhibiting this year at the US Pavilion, Bruce Nauman. All of the guests were asked to remove their shoes before boarding the Timoteo so as not to damage the boat's delicate teak deck. Bien sûr, Carine was excused from going barefoot because she was wearing her Alaïa laceups which take an hour to lace up.

J'adore the laceup theme twining through Carine's entire ensemble—tying in the pattern of the blouse as well as its laces, winding through the bandage as bondage effect of the skirt, wending its way down to end with the Alaïa beauties. If only we could see the shoes in this photo...

Mesmerizing in Margiela

I loooove this photo of Carine Roitfeld, it perfectly captures the flurry of photographers that hover around this beautiful creature trying desperately to cement the ethereal. Note the shoulders of the Margiela jacket she is wearing. Sublime, non? I must admit a certain fascination with Martin Margiela the designer as well as his designs and I so appreciate the glimpse inside his world that we saw during Carine's CNN interview. Be sure to check it out if you missed it...

Adieu, Cannes

I needed to gain a sense of closure with one last post from Cannes, I felt that the photos were so limited this year. But here's a beauty of Carine Roitfeld on the dance floor being worshipped by her admirers. So hot.
