Carine Roitfeld selected the ultracool Alexa Chung for the "Une Fille Un Style" feature in the September 2010 issue of Vogue Paris. Below I have translated the text of the article from French to English, sorry to be a wee bit late. What is your opinion, do you like the style of Alexa Chung?
Des jambes qui n'en finissent pas, des yeux en amande à 'ADN chinois, et une allure devenue l'emblème du new cool made in UK : tour à tour animatrice telé, journaliste, d-jette et égérie à l'humeur clean et enjouée convoitée par Lacoste et Mulberry, Alexa Chung tient à la fois de la grand sœur idéale et de la meilleure copine rêvée.
UNE FILLE: Devenue fille du moment grâce à It's on with Alexa Chung, le talk-show sous perfusion Twitter qu'elle animait sur MTV jusqu'au mois de décembre dernier, c'est avec le mannequinat qu'Alexa a commencé. Repérée à Reading lors d'un festival de musique, elle accepte à 16 ans de poser à mi-temps, ‹‹par curiosité et sans y connaître grand-chose : ma principale initiation mode venait de ma sœur, étudiante en design textile, dont j'avais cassé la machine à coudre.›› Multipliant campagnes mainstream et séries pour teen magazines, la liane (1,74 m) au sang mêlée (son père est d'origine asiatique) déchante, tâte de la pub télé pour finalement animer une batterie d'émissions sur Channel 4. Sa voix fumée, son ton direct mais pas désinvolte, sa dextérité à mixer mode et pop culture la propulsant vedette au quotidien sur MTV, face à Rihanna, Diane Kruger et autre Lady Gaga. Désormais new-yorkaise autant que londonienne, écrivant pour The Independent et aujourd'hui le Vogue anglais, Alexa Chung caracole sur la crête de la hype — mais refuse dans un éclat de rire d'être labellisée ‹‹it-girl››, ‹‹un terme à la limite du déprimant››.
UN STYLE: Entre le preppy sage et le garçon manqué, les bancs d'Eton et la boue de Glastonbury : micro-sac Chanel matelassé et mini-short déchiré, col claudine et salopette en denim. ‹‹Je ne suis pas très féminine, loin en tout cas du glamour cheesy des robes de gala. Quand j'ai commencé, au début des années 2000, les filles voulaient toutes être super-sexy. Je préférais déjà des formes plus masculines et des couleurs assez traditionnelles : noir et blanc, indigo, gris souris. Et les rayures. J'ai toujours adoré les rayures.›› Adepte de la marinière bien avant son come-back cet été, Alexa s'est quand même laissée tenter par les tenues de soirée : récemment, en veste de smoking au Met Ball, et même en robe longue Marc Jacobs à la remise des prix du CFDA.
RÉFÉRENCES: Naturellement, des femmes à l'humeur androgyne. ‹‹Bizarrement, des femmes qui vivent entre la France et le Royaume-Uni : Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling, Kristin Scott-Thomas, autant pour le style que pour le caractère, et ce petit truc masculin, assez indéfinissable qui, l'air de rien, signe une personnalité.›› A rajouter dans son panthéon d'égéries des années 60 et 70, Anita Pallenberg, pour la coupe de cheveux, et Françoise Hardy, qu'elle rêve d'interviewer.
TABOUS: Pas beaucoup. Les jambières. Et la fourrure. ‹‹Je porte du cuir sans problème, mais je suis végétarienne depuis que j'ai 15 ans. C'est un peu compliqué, mais on peut me classer comme militante de la cause animale à plus de 50%.››
SHOPPING: Côté marques, des labels au chic anonyme (Acne, APC), une petite veste taille boléro de chez Chanel, un jean Levi's. Côté créateurs, Charles Anastase, pour ses associations de couleurs, de matières, ses allusions à la culture punk; Irfe, ‹‹à la fois très fluide, et très architecturé››; et Carven, pour les robes au-dessus du genou et les cols sages signés Guillaume Henry. ‹‹Je suis également une grande fan de vintage, et je fais des virées régulières dans les boutiques de Brick Lane : on y trouve des vestes d'homme, des tea-dresses des années 40 que je fais ensuite recouper.››
ACCESSOIRES: Pour les chaussures, pas de diktats. Aussi à l'aise dans une paire de ballerines Chanel, de sandales plates Vivienne Westwood ou d'escarpins Marni, ce sont plutôt les sacs qui ont tendance à l'étourdir. Dès qu'elle a commencé à travailler, Alexa a économisé pour acheter le Bayswater de chez Mulberry : le maroquinier britannique l'a remerciée en créant un modèle à son nom, hit en boutiques où les listes d'attente ne cessent de s'allonger. Elle est aussi fidèle à Chanel, en version mini et XXL, ainsi qu'à Louis Vuitton et à l'anglais Russell & Bromley. Revers de la médaille : ‹‹Je passe mon temps à tout transférer d'un sac à un autre. Je mise donc sur l'encombrement minimal : BlackBerry, clés, passeport, carnet de notes et make-up de première nécessité.››
BIJOUX: Direction Crazy Pig Designs, une maison londonienne spécialisée dans les bijoux ésotériques : crânes de loup ou d'oiseau en argent, mains de squelette, œil en céramique... Un méli-mélo gothico-éclectique, pour une fille qui affirme ne pas aimer les diamants, mais rêve quand même que son petit copain — Alex Turner, du groupe Arctic Monkeys — finisse par lui en offrir un. Avis à l'intéressé : Alexa a repéré chez Liberty des bagues sur lesquelles la pierre est sertie à l'intérieur de l'anneau.
BEAUTÉ: De la crème pour le corps Weleda pour hydrater le visage, un soupçon de rouge à lèvres M.A.C. sur les lèvres (ou du fond de teint pour un effet nude), un trait d'eyeliner Chanel sur les paupières : le tour est joué, vite fait, bien fait, sprayé d'un peu de parfum Comme des Garçons (no. 4) ou de cologne Creed.
FORME: Elle a beaucoup nagé, ne fait plus de sport, pense à se mettre au Pilates. Entre-temps, c'est ping-pong entre amis (Poppy Delevigne, Agyness Deyn, Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof...) et soirée au Gutter, le bowling de Brooklyn. ‹‹Je n'ai aucun secret, aucune recette de grand-mère››, affirme Alexa, à ranger sans réserve dans la catégorie des filles clean plus accro au jus de pomme qu'aux excès alcoolisés. Et pour conjurer le jet-lag entre Londres, New York, une journée à Singapour et une soirée à Hong-Kong, l'impénitente voyageuse mise sur l'excitation de nouvelles rencontres, de nouveaux projets.
OBSESSION: ‹‹Je me balade toujours avec un appareil photo jetable. Je trouve ça plus ludique que le digital, et j'aime bien l'idée de documenter mes rencontres, les endroits où je vais. C'est autant une façon de se souvenir qu'un moyen de s'amuser.››
CHEZ ELLE: A New York, un appartement à Williamsburg, d'où elle va à pied siroter un cocktail au bar du Delmano. A Londres, une maison dans Shoreditch, quartier où se mêlent épiceries pakistanaises et cyclistes tatoués, galeries d'art et clones de Henry Holland (attention, le vrai aussi habite le coin). Un intérieur en forme de grand bazar assumé : des vêtements partout, des animaux empaillés, et une gentille voisine qui lui claque la bise en sortant les poubelles.
AVENIR: Elle aimerait vivre à Paris et à Berlin, ‹‹mais dans dix ans je me vois avec un chien, des enfants, ayant appris à cuisiner et ayant monté ma propre affaire. Peut-être dans la mode. Mais pas nécessairement. Je crois que j'ai le temps››.
Legs that never end, almond eyes of Chinese DNA, and a look that has become the emblem of the new cool "Made in the UK": by turns TV announcer, journalist, DJ, and muse with a clean and playful allure coveted by Lacoste and Mulberry, Alexa Chung is at the same time the ideal big sister and dream best friend.
A GIRL: She has become the girl of the moment thanks to It's On With Alexa Chung, the talk show made popular via Twitter that she hosted on MTV until last December; also Alexa has begun modeling. Spotted in Reading at a music festival, at the age of 16 she agreed to pose part-time, "out of curiosity and without knowing too much: my main fashion initiation came from my sister, a student in textile design, whereas I have a broken sewing machine." SHOPPING: Side brands, chic anonymous labels (Acne, APC), a small bolero jacket from Chanel, Levi's jeans. As for designers, Charles Anastase, for his color combinations, his materials, his allusions to punk culture; Irfe, "at once very fluid and very structured;" and Carven, for dresses above the knee and smart collars by Guillaume Henry. "I am also a big fan of vintage, and I make regular trips to the boutiques on Brick Lane; there are men's jackets, tea dresses of the 40s that I then remake."
ACCESSORIES: For shoes, no dictates. Equally comfortable in a pair of Chanel ballet flats, flat Vivienne Westwood sandals, or Marni court shoes, it is more likely her handbags which tend to stun. When she started working, Alexa saved to buy the Bayswater by Mulberry: the British leather goods company thanked her by creating a model in her name, it hit stores and the waiting lists are growing. She is also loyal to Chanel, in the mini version and XXL, as well as Louis Vuitton and the English label Russell & Bromley. The downside: "I spend all my time transfering from one bag to another. So I have the minimal encumberment: BlackBerry, keys, passport, notebook and make-up essentials. "
JEWELRY: Director of Crazy Pig Designs, a London firm specializing in esoteric jewelry like wolf skulls and birds in silver, skeleton hands, eyes in ceramic... A gothic-eclectic mishmash, a girl who claims not to love diamonds, but still dreams that her boyfriend — Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys — will eventually offer her one. Notice to those interested: Alexa has spotted at Liberty the rings in which the stone is set inside.
BEAUTY: Weleda body cream to moisturize the face, a touch of red MAC lipstick on the lips (or foundation for a nude effect), a stroke of Chanel eyeliner on the eyelids: voilà, quick, well done, spray some Comme des Garçons (no. 4) perfume or Creed cologne.
FORM: She swims a lot, no longer for sport, thinks about getting down to Pilates. Meanwhile, it's ping-pong with friends (Poppy Delevigne, Agyness Deyn, Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof...) and evenings at Gutter, a bowling alley in Brooklyn. "I have no secret from my grandmother, no recipe," says Alexa, classified without reservation in the category of clean girls more addicted to apple juice than excessive alcohol. And to ward off jet-lag between London, New York, a day in Singapore, and a night in Hong Kong, this unrepentant traveler likes the excitement of meeting new people, of new projects.
